BEHIND THE NUMBERS

From votes to Parliament

This dashboard reads the Electoral Commission’s preliminary count. It calculates a Parliament if the current party votes and electorate leaders were the final result. It is not a forecast of uncounted votes.

The MMP calculation

  1. A party qualifies with at least 5% of valid party votes, or at least one electorate seat.
  2. Qualifying parties share the 120 base seats using Sainte-Laguë divisors: 1, 3, 5, 7 and so on. Seats for independent or non-party-vote electorate winners are reserved first.
  3. Electorate wins come out of a party’s entitlement. Its remaining entitlement becomes list seats.
  4. If a party wins more electorates than its entitlement, it keeps them. These extra seats create an overhang and raise the majority required.

What “reporting” means

The progress figure is the percentage of voting-place results returned. A place can return separate results for several electorates. This is not the percentage of physical venues or of all votes counted. Special votes are generally counted later.

Reading a partial count

Current electorate leaders are provisional. Tied races are unresolved. Changes in leaders, parties crossing the threshold, and list-candidate limits can change the allocation. No uncounted votes are estimated.

The data pipeline

The browser checks our API every 60 seconds while visible. A server-side cache shares official-source requests between viewers. If retrieval fails, any retained snapshot is explicitly marked stale with its original timestamp.
